Textual, by default, provides a rich array of Keyboard Shortcuts. However, we understand that there are times when a keyboard shortcut is not the best for every user for one reason or another. This small guide will walk you through overriding a keyboard shortcut built into Textual.

Note: This guide will apply to almost all keyboard shortcuts in Textual. However, there are a few that are hard-coded into the application itself that cannot be changed. We apologize for this, but these are done for a reason.

1. Find the Old Shortcut

To override an existing shortcut, the system first needs to know the name of the menu item that handles the keyboard shortcut.

Navigate the menus of Textual by either using the menu bar at the top of the screen or using the various right click menus available throughout the application. If a keyboard shortcut is not found in the menu bar, then chances are good it is defined in the right click menus. Check both.

Note the exact title of the menu item that the keyboard shortcut represents.

Step 2: Navigate to Keyboard Preferences

The keyboard preferences can be located in System Preferences.

Open System Preferences and select Keyboard. Next, select Keyboard Shortcuts near the top of the preference pane. In the far left menu of the newly selected tab, select Application Shortcuts.

Step 1

From this window, we will override the keyboard shortcut built into Textual.

3. Replace the Shortcut

In the Keyboard Shortcuts tab of Keyboard preferences press the plus sign (+) under Application Shortcuts to insert a new entry.

Select Textual as the application in the window that appears. Next, enter the title of the menu item that you found. Lastly, define the preferred keyboard shortcut. Save.
