Summary:
This makes tests closer to production setup and removes a bunch of "saved
backup bundle to ..." messages.
With D9236657, this should not hurt server-side performance.
Unfortunately a lot tests cannot be migrated easily, mostly because revision
numbers are used. They are left with a TODO.

Summary:
When you get an error, let's print the number of conflicts in each file. This will give the user some sense of how much work they have to do.
The code change is entirely in `filemerge.py`, and `tests/test-merge-conflict-count.t` adds a new test.

Previously, we'd rely on the implicit check that `localrepo.commit` did.
The problem is that that check only happened when the working copy was
dirty. With a "clean" working copy but unresolved conflicts we'd get
into a broken state.
To fix that, do what rebase does and check for unresolved conflicts at
the start of histedit --continue.
There are various ways to use histedit such that an item in
the list of things to perform will not result in a change
relative to the previous repository state.
When that happens, histedit does not keep the commit/message.
This changes the note to try to explain to the user that it
will not be present in their history.
The current output for a failed merge with conflict markers looks something like:
merging foo
warning: conflicts during merge.
merging foo incomplete! (edit conflicts, then use 'hg resolve --mark')
merging bar
warning: conflicts during merge.
merging bar incomplete! (edit conflicts, then use 'hg resolve --mark')
We're going to change the way merges are done to perform all premerges before
all merges, so that the output above would look like:
merging foo
merging bar
warning: conflicts during merge.
merging foo incomplete! (edit conflicts, then use 'hg resolve --mark')
warning: conflicts during merge.
merging bar incomplete! (edit conflicts, then use 'hg resolve --mark')
The 'warning: conflicts during merge' line has no context, so is pretty
confusing.
This patch will change the future output to:
merging foo
merging bar
warning: conflicts while merging foo! (edit, then use 'hg resolve --mark')
warning: conflicts while merging bar! (edit, then use 'hg resolve --mark')
The hint on how to resolve the conflicts makes this a bit unwieldy, but solving
that is tricky because we already hint that people run 'hg resolve' to retry
unresolved merges. The 'hg resolve --mark' mostly applies to conflict marker
based resolution.
This converts the pick action into a histeditclass instance, as part of an
ongoing effort to refactor histedit for maintainability and robustness.
The test output changed because previously pick would only report the commit
disappearing if there were no merge conflicts. Now that we've unified the normal
and the --continue flows, they act the same and we get the warning even after
--continue.
The recently introduced message was:
no unresolved files; you may continue your unfinished operation
This had three problems:
- looks a bit like an error message because it's not saying "we've
just resolved the last file"
- refers to "unfinished operation", which won't be the case with
"update" or "merge"
- introduces semicolons to error messages, which is stylistically
questionable
I've simplified this to:
no more unresolved files
In the future, if we want to prompt someone to continue a particular operation, we should use
a hint style:
no more unresolved files
(use 'hg graft --continue' to finish grafting)
When using resolve, users often have to consult with the output of |hg
resolve -l| to see if any unresolved files remain. This step is tedious
and adds overhead to resolving.
This patch will notify a user if there are no unresolved files remaining
after executing |hg resolve|::
no unresolved files; you may continue your unfinished operation
The patch stops short of telling the user exactly what command should be
executed to continue the unfinished operation. That is because this
information is not currently captured anywhere. This would make a
compelling follow-up feature.
This changeset move all checks and raises related to arguments
validation to the top of the file. This gathers all the logic in one
place and clarifies the code doing actual work. This paves the way for
splitting this gigantic function in separated functions.
A `goal` variable is introduced in the process. It holds the action to
be done by this invocation (new, continue or abort).
An invalid invocation is found in the process (the new code is a bit stricter).
This is simpler than temporary file version. There some minor test
changes since commit messages are no longer modifed. There is still
some tests using --commands with a real file.
Have histedit record the hex of the original changeset as already done by:
- graft
- commit --amend
- rebase
My main motivation for adding this is to prevent the creation of obsolescence cycle
(see issue3681).
Note that commit created during edit are not affected yet.
The old and fragile patching logic is replaced by smart merges (as rebase and
graft do). This should prevents some conflicts and smoother human resolution.
For this purpose the "foldchanges" function is renamed to "applychanges" and
handle a single revision only.
The previous version would commute if using merge algorithm (to be accurate,
merge will cleanly prompt the user during the merge).
The new version create and initial commit with some content for all involved
files en ensure all changes are a content changes of the first lines. This lead
to guaranteed conflict when commuted.
