279f8962a7 conflicts: make spacing consistent in conflict markers
The way default marker template was defined before this patch,
the spacing before dash in conflict markes was dependent on
whether changeset is a tip one or not. This is a relevant part
of template:
    '{ifeq(tags, "tip", "", "{tags} "}'
If revision is a tip revision with no other tags, this would
resolve to an empty string, but for revisions which are not tip
and don't have any other tags, this would resolve to a single
space string. In the end this causes weirdnesses like the ones
you can see in the affected tests.

This is a not a big deal, but double spacing may be visually
less pleasant.

Please note that test changes where commit hashes change are
the result of marking files as resolved without removing markers.

906104f96d merge: use labels in prompts to the user
Now that we persist the labels, we can consistently use the labels in
prompts for the user without risk of confusion. This changes a huge amount
of command output:

This means that merge prompts like:
no tool found to merge a
  keep (l)ocal, take (o)ther, or leave (u)nresolved? u
and
remote changed a which local deleted
  use (c)hanged version, leave (d)eleted, or leave (u)nresolved? c
become:
no tool found to merge a
keep (l)ocal [working copy], take (o)ther [destination], or leave (u)nresolved? u
and
remote [source] changed a which local [dest] deleted
  use (c)hanged version, leave (d)eleted, or leave (u)nresolved? c
where "working copy" and "destination" were supplied by the command that
requested the merge as labels for conflict markers, and thus should be
human-friendly.

2e0675043e update: warn about other topological heads on bare update
A concern around the user experience of Mercurial is user getting stuck on there
own topological branch forever. For example, someone pulling another topological
branch, missing that message in pull asking them to merge and getting stuck on
there own local branch.

The current way to "address" this concern was for bare 'hg update' to target the
tipmost (also latest pulled) changesets and complain when the update was not
linear. That way, failure to merge newly pulled changesets would result in some
kind of failure.

Yet the failure was quite obscure, not working in all cases (eg: commit right
after pull) and the behavior was very impractical in the common case
(eg: issue4673).

To be able to change that behavior, we need to provide other ways to alert a
user stucks on one of many topological head. We do so with an extra message after
bare update:

1 other heads for branch "default"

Bookmark get its own special version:

1 other divergent bookmarks for "foobar"

There is significant room to improve the message itself, and we should augment
it with hint about how to see theses other heads or handle the situation (see
in-line comment). But having "a" message is already a significant improvement
compared to the existing situation. Once we have it we can iterate on a better
version of it. As having such message is an important step toward changing the
default destination for update and other nicety, I would like to move forward
quickly on getting such message.

This was discussed during London - October 2015 Sprint.

106adbe75b filemerge: default regular prompts to 'leave unresolved' (BC)
It makes far more sense to leave these conflicts unresolved and kick back to
the user than to just assume that the local version be chosen. There are almost
certainly buggy scripts and applications using Mercurial in the wild that do
merges or rebases non-interactively, and then assume that if the operation
succeeded there's nothing the user needs to pay attention to.

a6dc53e738 simplemerge: move conflict warning message to filemerge
The current output for a failed merge with conflict markers looks something like:

  merging foo
  warning: conflicts during merge.
merging foo incomplete! (edit conflicts, then use 'hg resolve --mark')
  merging bar
  warning: conflicts during merge.
merging bar incomplete! (edit conflicts, then use 'hg resolve --mark')

We're going to change the way merges are done to perform all premerges before
all merges, so that the output above would look like:

  merging foo
  merging bar
  warning: conflicts during merge.
merging foo incomplete! (edit conflicts, then use 'hg resolve --mark')
  warning: conflicts during merge.
merging bar incomplete! (edit conflicts, then use 'hg resolve --mark')

The 'warning: conflicts during merge' line has no context, so is pretty
confusing.

This patch will change the future output to:

  merging foo
  merging bar
warning: conflicts while merging foo! (edit, then use 'hg resolve --mark')
warning: conflicts while merging bar! (edit, then use 'hg resolve --mark')

The hint on how to resolve the conflicts makes this a bit unwieldy, but solving
that is tricky because we already hint that people run 'hg resolve' to retry
unresolved merges. The 'hg resolve --mark' mostly applies to conflict marker
based resolution.

281365197e progress: get the extremely verbose output out of default debug
When the progress extension is not enabled, each call to 'ui.progress' used to
issue a debug message. This results is a very verbose output and often redundant
in tests. Dropping it makes tests less volatile to factor they do not meant to
test.

We had to alter the sed trick in 'test-rename-merge2.t'. Sed is used to drop all
output from a certain point and hidding the progress output remove its anchor.
So we anchor on something else.

473137c772 merge: change debug logging - test output changes but no real changes
Preparing for action list split-up, making sure the final change don't have any
test changes.

The patch moves debug statements around without really changing anything.
Arguably, it temporarily makes the code worse. The only justification is that
it makes it easier to review the test changes ... and in the end the big change
will not change test output at all.

The changes to test output are due to changes in the ordering of debug output.
That is mainly because we now do the debug logging for files when we actually
process them. Files are also processed in a slightly different but still
correct order. It is now primarily ordered by action type, secondarily by
filename.

The patch introduces some redundancy. Some of it will be removed again, some of
it will in the end help code readability and efficiency. It is possible that we
later on could introduce a "process this action list and do some logging and
progress reporting and apply this function".

The "preserving X for resolve" debug statements will only have single space
indentation. It will no longer have a leading single space indented "f: msg ->
m" message. Having this message double indented would thus no longer make
sense.

The bid actions will temporarily be sorted using a custom sort key that happens
to match the sort order the simplified code will have in the end.

0cb0a7ba67 resolve: simplify "finished" message
The recently introduced message was:

no unresolved files; you may continue your unfinished operation

This had three problems:

- looks a bit like an error message because it's not saying "we've
  just resolved the last file"
- refers to "unfinished operation", which won't be the case with
  "update" or "merge"
- introduces semicolons to error messages, which is stylistically
  questionable

I've simplified this to:

  no more unresolved files

In the future, if we want to prompt someone to continue a particular operation, we should use
a hint style:

  no more unresolved files
(use 'hg graft --continue' to finish grafting)

85e363fea8 resolve: print message when no unresolved files remain (issue4214)
When using resolve, users often have to consult with the output of |hg
resolve -l| to see if any unresolved files remain. This step is tedious
and adds overhead to resolving.

This patch will notify a user if there are no unresolved files remaining
after executing |hg resolve|::

no unresolved files; you may continue your unfinished operation

The patch stops short of telling the user exactly what command should be
executed to continue the unfinished operation. That is because this
information is not currently captured anywhere. This would make a
compelling follow-up feature.

ee476759ff merge: delay debug messages for merge actions
Show messages at a point where the actions have been sorted, thus preparing for
backout of 14f4258e3526.

This makes manifestmerge more of a silent operation, just like 'copies' is.

Indent 'preserving' messages to make them subordinate to the action logging so
they fit in the new context. (The 'preserving' messages are quite redundant and
could also be removed completely.)

37a2d73d5e merge: merge file flags together with file content
The 'x' flag and the 'l' flag are very different. It is usually not a problem
to change the 'x' flag of a normal file independent of the content, but one
does not simply change the type of a file to 'l' independent of the content.

This removes the fmerge function that merged both 'x' and 'l' independent of
content early in the merge process. This correctly introduces some conflicts
instead of silent incorrect merges. 3-way flag merge will now be done in the
resolve process, right next to file content merge. Conflicts can thus be
resolved with (slightly inconvenient) resolve commands like 'resolve f --tool
internal:other'. It thus brings us closer to be able to re-solve manifest merge
after the merge and avoid prompts during merge.

This also removes the "conflicting flags for a - (n)one, e(x)ec or sym(l)ink?"
prompt that nobody could answer and that made it easy to mix symlink targets
and file contents up. Instead it will give a file merge where a sufficiently
clever merge tool can help resolving the issue.
