Fang	b5a9a7d538	vere: move scry api into pier.c, interleave events ... Scries were being prioritized over events, in the IPC queue. If scry requests came in faster than we could process them (as is easily the case for ames forward requests), this would cause scries to completely clog the IPC queue, preventing any events from being processed at all. The short-term solution implemented here is to simply alternate between scry requests and events when building/sending a work batch. To accomplish this, we separate scry requests into their own queue. We keep this in pier.c, and pass them on to lord.c interleaved with regular events in _pier_work_send. The interleaving of regular events (as opposed to doing scries with the highest priority) complicates the situation around auto-filled scry cases (for scrying at "the latest timestamp"). To ensure we're always scrying at a sane latest timestamp, we keep a queue of u3_pico, instead of fully-qualified scry requests. Where necessary, lord.c fills in the missing path elements right before sending it over the pipe.	2020-08-05 01:24:01 +02:00

There was a TODO in runShips about how the different layers of the RIO environment had to be changed, so that there was a layer between KingEnv and PierEnv for things shared between individual Piers, but which weren't used outside of any PierEnv. This addresses those TODOs by creating RunningEnv, which for now just owns MultiEyreApi and makes it so we don't have to pass the entire thing around explicitly. That macro is used in pkg/urbit/vere/disk.c to change the lmdb mapsize from 1TB to 60GB for aarch64 on linux. Philip Monk	1d0409c4c4	ames: fix lane discovery during some lane changes ... We used to not accept new indirect lanes if we already have a direct lane. This means that if Bob, with a publicly-accessible lane, changes lanes (eg by restarting the process and getting a new port or changing ip addresses), tries to talk to Alice, who is behind a NAT, then Bob will try directly but fail (because Alice is behind a NAT), so he will route the message through her galaxy. This is good -- the message gets to Alice. However, Alice had a direct route to Bob's old lane, so she will try to ack on that lane, which fails. She will not time out this lane because she doesn't know that Bob isn't getting the acks (acks don't have their own acks). The solution is that if Alice receives an indirect lane for Bob when she already has a direct lane, she shouldn't ignore it. If the lane is the same as what she has, she shouldn't change anything (in particular, she shouldn't mark it as indirect). But if it's a new lane, she should discard her old direct lane and use the new indirect lane.	2020-07-24 20:41:48 -07:00

Philip Monk	7ded3f127c	noun: don't add identical values to song_x_cape's hashtable ... We were unconditionally adding equal items to the hashtable of already-compared pointers. This table exists so that if we've already determined two non-pointer-equal nouns are value-equal, we don't have to check them again. However, atoms (especially direct) ended up in this hashtable even though we don't look those up. This makes sure we don't add items to the hashtable if they're "pointer"-equal (which for direct atoms is value-equal). The impact of this inefficiency was greatly magnified by the issue with +mug where (mug a a) = (mug b b) for all a, b. For this reason, these identical pairs added to the hashtable always had the same mug, so they were added to the same bucket, which meant adding to that list required linearly traversing the entire bucket. This was the first barrier that was causing |pack to take a long time on ships which distribute OTAs, but it isn't a complete solution for |pack.	2020-07-15 12:33:54 -07:00

Once the counter hits 1000, further packets are dropped instead of forwarded. Ideally you want to drop the oldest packets first, but this'd imply removing scry events from the event log, which ames.c shouldn't know how to do.
