15Synopsis: Conversion between markup formats
16Description: Pandoc is a Haskell library for converting from one markup
17 format to another, and a command-line tool that uses
18 this library. It can read markdown and (subsets of) HTML,
19 reStructuredText, LaTeX, DocBook, MediaWiki markup, Haddock
20 markup, OPML, and Textile, and it can write markdown,
21 reStructuredText, HTML, LaTeX, ConTeXt, Docbook, OPML,
22 OpenDocument, ODT, Word docx, RTF, MediaWiki, Textile,
23 groff man pages, plain text, Emacs Org-Mode, AsciiDoc,
24 EPUB (v2 and v3), FictionBook2, and several kinds of
25 HTML/javascript slide shows (S5, Slidy, Slideous, DZSlides,

28 Pandoc extends standard markdown syntax with footnotes,
29 embedded LaTeX, definition lists, tables, and other
30 features. A compatibility mode is provided for those
31 who need a drop-in replacement for Markdown.pl.

33 In contrast to existing tools for converting markdown
34 to HTML, which use regex substitutions, pandoc has
35 a modular design: it consists of a set of readers,
36 which parse text in a given format and produce a native
37 representation of the document, and a set of writers,
38 which convert this native representation into a target
39 format. Thus, adding an input or output format requires
40 only adding a reader or writer.
