15Synopsis: Conversion between markup formats
16Description: Pandoc is a Haskell library for converting from one markup
17 format to another, and a command-line tool that uses
18 this library. It can read markdown and (subsets of)
19 reStructuredText, HTML, LaTeX and Textile, and it can write
20 markdown, reStructuredText, HTML, LaTeX, ConTeXt, Docbook,
21 OpenDocument, ODT, RTF, MediaWiki, Textile, groff man pages,
22 plain text, Emacs Org-Mode, EPUB, and S5 and Slidy HTML
23 slide shows.

25 Pandoc extends standard markdown syntax with footnotes,
26 embedded LaTeX, definition lists, tables, and other
27 features. A compatibility mode is provided for those
28 who need a drop-in replacement for Markdown.pl.

30 In contrast to existing tools for converting markdown
31 to HTML, which use regex substitutions, pandoc has
32 a modular design: it consists of a set of readers,
33 which parse text in a given format and produce a native
34 representation of the document, and a set of writers,
35 which convert this native representation into a target
36 format. Thus, adding an input or output format requires
37 only adding a reader or writer.
