20+Since Port’s release it has become the preferred way for most people to get started with Urbit. With the launch of L2, we’ve seen an increase in network onboarding, most of which is exclusively done through Port. Given this it is clear that Port is critical infrastructure for the Urbit ecosystem and currently is only maintained by Hunter Miller (~nocsyx-lassul), who created it.
22+Our goal is to keep Port at a high level of usability and also add significant features to it over time. There are lots of opportunities to add improvements that help educate users about Urbit and give them the capability to run their ship smoothly, without CLI knowledge. We also have a unique opportunity to create a nexus for planet sales and hosting.
24+If you have strong design and/or development skills and are looking to make an impact with your Urbit development, this is a good project to be on. We may recruit more than one contributor for this role.
28+The below is a non-exhaustive list of the types of work we will need:
30+- General maintenance as bugs arise
32+- UX improvements and designs for roadmapped features
36+- Designing and implementing future features from this list
38+- Thinking and researching new feature ideas
44+- Experience with modern React and Typescript
46+- Ability to run Windows, Linux, and MacOS in some capacity (VMs ok)
48+- Experience with Electron helpful but not required
50+- Ability to work directly with designers
54+- Familiarity with multiple operating systems
56+- Ability to work directly with engineers
58+- Experience working on apps or app-like interfaces, especially with large numbers of users in varied environments
60+- Ability to follow the current design of Port and make new features feel seamless
64+- At least 10 hours/week
68+- Weekly check-in meeting with ~nocsyx-lassul
72+- $4000 in WSTR per month initially (assuming ~10 hours/week part-time)
74+- More WSTR can be negotiated if the developer has greater availability and can commit more time
