Urbit

Urbit is an open source, decentralized, personal cloud computing platform.

Your Urbit is a personal server: a general-purpose computer in the cloud which stores all your data, runs all your apps, and manages your connected devices.

Each Urbit is part of a global, decentralized, peer-to-peer network that runs on top of the internet.

Our mission is to create a virtual city of personal servers in the cloud.

Digital freedom for everyone

We believe controlling your own data, code and identity is the definition of digital freedom. We believe the only path to this freedom is a general-purpose computer designed for human beings.

Your Urbit is your cryptographic identity, permanent personal archive, general-purpose computing platform and secure network of devices. The convenience of cloud computing is fantastic, but it need not come at the cost of our security, control and creativity.

A frontier to homestead

In Urbit, network address space is cryptographic property, like Bitcoin. If Bitcoin is money and Ether is law, Urbit is land.

The Urbit network is designed to grow into a digital republic: a network where each node is individually owned with no central point of control. We think of the Urbit network as a city: decentralized but connected, safe but free.

Personal computing all over again

Imagine that you could simply install a new interface for Facebook, or fork the business logic of Reddit. We're working to build a world where you run whatever software you want, never lose data and can switch with no cost.

On a completely new stack

Ordinary people can't manage a Unix server on the Internet. A bare server just wasn't designed for the demands of 2016. Urbit is a clean-slate design, from interpreter axioms to packet protocol, that runs on top of Unix and the Internet.

Urbit is fun to play and program with, but is still in its early phases. We've been working quietly so far, but the system is now ready for developers to explore and experiment on top of.

Soon we’re going to pre-sell the first blocks of Urbit address space.
