### Important Notes
Launcher now correctly recognizes that the newest engine needs some runtime:
```sh
> java -jar launcher.jar list
Enso 2023.2.1-nightly.2023.10.31 -> GraalVM 23.0.0-java17.0.7
Enso 0.0.0-dev -> GraalVM 23.1.0-java21.0.1
```
(this has not worked before)
Changelog:
- update: always create an event log next to the profiling file when the engine is started with the `--profiling-path` flag
- remove: `--profiling-events-log-path` flag
close#8249
Changelog:
- add: `profiling/snapshot` request that takes a heap dump of the language server and puts it in the `ENSO_DATA_DIRECTORY/profiling` direcotry
Attaching or modifying a visualizations returns early on, to avoid a situation when a background job is stalled (by other jobs) and eventually the request timeouts.
This has an unfortunate consequence that any error reported in the `UpsertVisualizationJob` cannot be reported as a directly reply to a request because the sender has already been removed from the list.
Added more logs to discover why we get errors in the first place.
Modified the API a bit so that we carry `VisualizationContext` instead of three parameters all over the place.
Bonus:
Modified `JsonRpcServerTestKit` to implicitly require a position so that we get better error reporting on failures.
Upgrade to GraalVM JDK 21.

```
With SDKMan, download with `sdk install java 21-graalce`.
# Important Notes
- After this PR, one can theoretically run enso with any JRE with version at least 21.
- Removed `sbt bootstrap` hack and all the other build time related hacks related to the handling of GraalVM distribution.
- `project-manager` remains backward compatible - it can open older engines with runtimes. New engines now do no longer require a separate runtime to be downloaded.
- sbt does not support compilation of `module-info.java` files in mixed projects - https://github.com/sbt/sbt/issues/3368
- Which means that we can have `module-info.java` files only for Java-only projects.
- Anyway, we need just a single `module-info.class` in the resulting `runtime.jar` fat jar.
- `runtime.jar` is assembled in `runtime-with-instruments` with a custom merge strategy (`sbt-assembly` plugin). Caching is disabled for custom merge strategies, which means that re-assembly of `runtime.jar` will be more frequent.
- Engine distribution contains multiple JAR archives (modules) in `component` directory, along with `runner/runner.jar` that is hidden inside a nested directory.
- The new entry point to the engine runner is [EngineRunnerBootLoader](https://github.com/enso-org/enso/pull/7991/files#diff-9ab172d0566c18456472aeb95c4345f47e2db3965e77e29c11694d3a9333a2aa) that contains a custom ClassLoader - to make sure that everything that does not have to be loaded from a module is loaded from `runner.jar`, which is not a module.
- The new command line for launching the engine runner is in [distribution/bin/enso](https://github.com/enso-org/enso/pull/7991/files#diff-0b66983403b2c329febc7381cd23d45871d4d555ce98dd040d4d1e879c8f3725)
- [Newest version of Frgaal](https://repo1.maven.org/maven2/org/frgaal/compiler/20.0.1/) (20.0.1) does not recognize `--source 21` option, only `--source 20`.
Changelog:
- add: `profiling/stop` request stop the sampler and write the profiling data to the `$ENSO_DATA_DIR/profiling` directory
- refactor: rewrite the profiling logic into Java
Fixes a random crash (*) during instrumentation. Notice how `onTailCallReturn` calls `onReturnValue` with `null` frame.
Bonus: noticed that for some reason we weren't getting logs for `ExecutionService`. This turned out to be the problem with the logger name which by default was `[enso]` not
`[enso.org.enso.interpreter.service.ExecutionService`] and there is some logic there that normalizes the name and assumed a dot after `enso`. This change fixes the logic.
# Important Notes
Fixes regressions introduced in #8148 and #8162
This change fixes a regression introduced in #7918, which prevented the execution from setting the right log level either via env var or parameter.
Now passing either of the options returns logs of the expected level in the log file:
- `ENSO_LOG_TO_FILE_LOG_LEVEL = trace`
- ... `-vv` ...
Fixes#8274
Previously custom log levels applied only to non-Truffle loggers. To allow it, filtering has to be applied appropriately at two places - first at Java's Handler and then essentially re-confirmed at SLF4J's logger to which the former forwards to.
Filters compose in an `AND` condition, therefore default log level check had to be merged into our custom filters.
`TruffleLogger` has a builtin functionality to perform the filtering when context is configured appropriately. This should be much more efficient than adding a `Filter` to the JUL Handler explicitly.
# Important Notes
```
JAVA_OPTS="-org.enso.compiler.SerializationManager.Logger.level=debug" ./built-distribution/enso-engine-0.0.0-dev-linux-amd64/enso-0.0.0-dev/bin/enso --run
```
will now assign a custom log level to `SerializationManager` Logger.
Add `line:column` information to source code references produced by the parser. This information will be used by GUI2 as part of the solution to #8134.
# Important Notes
- `parse_all_enso_files.sh` has been used to ensure this doesn't affect tree structures.
- `parse_all_enso_files.sh` now checks emitted locations for consistency, and has been used to verify that all line:col references match the values found by an independent scan of the source up to the given UTF8 position.
The change upgrades `directory-watcher` library, hoping that it will fix the problem reported in #7695 (there has been a number of bug fixes in MacOS listener since then).
Once upgraded, tests in `WatcherAdapterSpec` because the logic that attempted to ensure the proper initialization order in the test using semaphore was wrong. Now starting the watcher using `watchAsync` which only returns the future when the watcher successfully registers for paths. Ideally authors of the library would make the registration bit public
(3218d68a84/core/src/main/java/io/methvin/watcher/DirectoryWatcher.java (L229C7-L229C20)) but it is the best we can do so far.
Had to adapt to the new API in PathWatcher as well, ensuring the right order of initialization.
Should fix#7695.
Using a `TruffleLogger` in `SerializationManager` that is bound to the engine rather than the context prevents reaching an illegal state when using thread pools.
Also cleaned up some tests for consistency.
Towards reduced reliance on Scala semantics.
Translated IR.scala to IR.java and extracted implicits that now need to be imported explicitly.
# Important Notes
1:1 translation. For now `@Identifier` and `@ExternalID` represent the old type aliases but are not verified at compile time.
This is because in a mixed Scala/Java world this seems impossible to employ such frameworks as Checker.
In order to execute `runtime-parser` in browser, we need to slightly simplify dependencies of our code.
- refactor: initialization logic to Java
- refactor: `UniqueJob` to a marker interface
- Validate spans during existing lexer and parser unit tests, and in `enso_parser_debug`.
- Fix lost span info causing failures of updated tests.
# Important Notes
- [x] Output of `parse_all_enso_files.sh` is unchanged since before #7881 (modulo libs changes since then).
- When the parser encounters an input with the first line indented, it now creates a sub-block for lines at than indent level, and emits a syntax error (every indented block must have a parent).
- When the parser encounters a number with a base but no digits (e.g. `0x`), it now emits a `Number` with `None` in the digits field rather than a 0-length digits token.
* Reduce extra output in compilation and tests
I couldn't stand the amount of extra output that we got when compiling
a clean project and when executing regular tests. We should strive to
keep output clean and not print anything additional to stdout/stderr.
* Getting rid of explicit setup by service loading
In order for SL4J to use service loading correctly had to upgrade to
latest slf4j. Unfortunately `TestLogProvider` which essentially
delegates to `logback` provider will lead to spurious ambiguous warnings
on multiple providers. In order to dictate which one to use and
therefore eliminate the warnings we can use the `slf4j.provider` env
var, which is only available in slf4j 2.x.
Now, there is no need to explicitly call `LoggerSetup.get().setup()` as
that is being called during service setup.
It seems that Runtime Connector wasn't respecting the protocol it defined itself. The connector should be waiting on the `Api.InitializedNotification` message and only then start forwarding messages. So far it seems this hasn't been a problem, or at least wasn't reported as such, because initialization was fast enough.
Modified `Handler` so that we are certain that its fields hold initialized values when being accessed by different threads.
Should fix problems mentioned in #7898.
Fixes#7474
Again, a quite complicated issue. The code editor was broken by https://github.com/enso-org/enso/pull/7167 for a few reasons:
1. The text component's shortcuts depend on the `focused` FRP endpoint, which is controlled by `deprecated_(de)focus` inputs. `focused` output was not changed by the code editor `model.focus()` call. (we still use `deprecated_focus` for all other components)
2. `focus()` FRP input was added to the text component but never triggered. It's too easy to confuse it with the `focus()` method of the `object::Instance` (Deref is evil!)
3. The graph editor handles clicks on the background by `blur_tree()`, effectively blurring any focused element in the application. But clicking on code editor (to focus it) also causes a click on the background! So we focus the code editor, and then handle the background click, defocusing it from the graph editor's point of view. It allows graph editor to open CB on <kbd>Enter</kbd> while the code editor is still active.
I solved (3) by disallowing CB opening while code editor is visible. Not ideal, but I guess it solves the issue.
Do you think the other solution is possible – to add some overlay for the code editor and avoid triggering `blur_tree` when clicking on it? That won't work because you still can't defocus the code editor using the new API, so it will always be focused.
So we have a situation when half of the app uses the new focus system, another half uses the old one, and none works properly.
Adds the ability to declare a module as *private*. Modifies the parser to add the `private` keyword as a reserved keyword. All the checks for private modules are implemented as an independent *Compiler pass*. No checks are done at runtime.
# Important Notes
- Introduces new keyword - `private` - a reserved keyword.
- Modules that have `private` keyword as the first statement are declared as *private* (Project private)
- Public module cannot have private submodules and vice versa.
- This would require runtime access checks
- See #7088 for the specification.
This PR adds support for the new Vue-based GUI (aka `gui2`).
The user-facing changes are primarily:
* the top-level `test` and `lint` commands will now invoke the relevant commands on the new GUI
* Enable log-to-file configuration
PR #7825 enabled parallel logging to a file with a much more
fine-grained log level by default.
However, logging at `TRACE` level on Windows appears to be still
problematic.
This PR reduced the default log level to file from `DEBUG` to `TRACE`
and allows to control it via an environment variable if one wishes to
change the verbosity without making code changes.
Changelog:
- update: project manager uses the packaged language server to open projects
- fix: remove stack traces from connection errors on initial ping handler request (when the language server is booting)
- update: add engine and edition versions to the `initProtocolConnection` response for easier debug
- update: do not resolve project ensoVersion in the `project/list` to eliminate unnecessary network calls
* Always log verbose to a file
The change adds an option by default to always log to a file with
verbose log level.
The implementation is a bit tricky because in the most common use-case
we have to always log in verbose mode to a socket and only later apply
the desired log levels. Previously socket appender would respect the
desired log level already before forwarding the log.
If by default we log to a file, verbose mode is simply ignored and does
not override user settings.
To test run `project-manager` with `ENSO_LOGSERVER_APPENDER=console` env
variable. That will output to the console with the default `INFO` level
and `TRACE` log level for the file.
* Make sure tests use test resources
Having `application.conf` in `src/main/resources` and `test/resources`
does not guarantee that in Tests we will pick up the latter. Instead, by
default it seems to do some kind of merge of different configurations,
which is far from desired.
* Ensure native launcher test log to console only
Logging to console and (temporary) files is problematic for Windows.
The CI also revealed a problem with the native configuration because it
was not possible to modify the launcher via env variables as everything
was initialized during build time.
* Adapt to method changes
* Potentially deal with Windows failures
- Closes#7461 by introducing a `Date_Time_Formatter` type and making parsing date time formats more robust and safer.
- The default ('simple') set of patterns is slightly simplified and made case insensitive (except for `M/m` and `H/h`) to avoid the `YYYY` vs `yyyy` issues and make it less error prone.
- The `YYYY` now has the same meaning as `yyyy` in simple mode. The old meaning (week-based year) is moved to a _separate mode_, triggered by `Date_Time_Formatter.from_iso_week_date_pattern`.
- Full Java syntax, as well as custom-built Java `DateTimeFormatter` can also be used by `Date_Time_Formatter.from_java`.
- Text-based constants (e.g. `ISO_ZONED_DATE_TIME`) have now become methods on `Date_Time_Formatter`, e.g. `Date_Time_Formatter.iso_zoned_date_time`).
* Improve shutdown logic of language server
This PR addresses problems mentioned in #7470 and #7729:
- shutting a language server explicitly will not lead to a soft shutdown
- `project/status` endpoint returns the state of the language server
`LanguageServerController` now also signed up for `ClientConnect`
messages. For it to be unambiguous, we need to carry around the port
number of the language server as a way of identifying the right one.
One can now use `project/status` to additionally determine the state of
the language server.
Also relies on a proper fix for #7765.
# Important Notes
- Binary LS endpoint is not yet handled.
- The parsing of provided source is not entirely correct, as each line (including imports) is treated as node. The usage of actual enso AST for nodes is not yet implemented.
- Modifications to the graph state are not yet synchronized back to the language server.
Resolve macros eagerly. Improves performance; allows parser to handle arbitrarily-long lines (fixes#7691).
# Important Notes
- A new utility, `lib/rust/parser/debug/tools/parse_all_enso_files.sh`, supports comparing ASTs parsed with different versions of the parser. This tool has been used to verify that this refactor doesn't change the result of parsing any standard library or test file.
Add support for recovering from GL context loss. When the context is restored, the loading spinner is shown until shaders finish recompiling.
[vokoscreenNG-2023-08-25_09-39-11.webm](https://github.com/enso-org/enso/assets/1047859/cfa90ec5-72a1-41e6-bafa-177fa5e85fb2)
*While the context is missing, the loading spinner is rendered in the 0% state. (This condition will not normally be observed, except momentarily, as the browser should restore the context immediately if it is lost while the page is visible.) When we receive a new context, the spinner switches to the 90% state until restoration completes. Restoration is fast, as we don't need to do much work except recompiling shaders.*
# Important Notes
- A new debug hotkey, Ctrl+Alt+Shift+X, causes context loss for testing. Pressing it a second time causes context restoration.
- `Texture` is still a CPU-bound texture. It now uses the "immutable" `texStorage/texSubImage` API, which is a ["preferred alternative"](https://registry.khronos.org/webgl/specs/latest/2.0/#3.7.6) to the `texImage` API because it can be more efficient.
- The type for texture uniforms is now `Uniform<Option<Texture>>`. Texture uniforms are decoupled from the context.
- A new `ContextLost` error type can be returned by functions that cannot complete if the context is lost.
- Fix some crashes that could occur when context was lost.
- Clarify ownership of some rendering-related types: Externalize, and where possible eliminate, `Rc/RefCell`s.
Closes: #7309
The changed origin of the visualization container caused the issue. Now, the origin is at the top left corner of the visualization, and bounding box abstraction expects the origin at the bottom left. Despite the comments in the code, the bounding box is designed to work with bottom-left origin only.
Fixes#7468
The fix is pretty simple: we reuse the existing functionality for importing stuff and generating expressions. It fixes issues with `Nothing` or `Report_Unmatched` types.
While debugging, I found it easier to work with a suggestion database when exported to some external format. Hence, I implemented serde serialization support for database entries and also a new debug shortcut <kbd>ctrl</kbd>+<kbd>shift</kbd>+<kbd>u</kbd> to dump all entries to the console.
This change replaces Enso's custom logger with an existing, mostly off the shelf logging implementation. The change attempts to provide a 1:1 replacement for the existing solution while requiring only a minimal logic for the initialization.
Loggers are configured completely via `logging-server` section in `application.conf` HOCON file, all initial logback configuration has been removed. This opens up a lot of interesting opportunities because we can benefit from all the well maintained slf4j implementations without being to them in terms of functionality.
Most important differences have been outlined in `docs/infrastructure/logging.md`.
# Important Notes
Addresses:
- #7253
- #6739
- Closes#7633
- Moves `Round_Spec.enso` from published `Standard.Test` into our `test/Tests` project; the `Table_Tests` that depend on it, simply `import enso_dev.Tests`.
- Changes the layout of the local libraries directory:
- It used to be `root/<namespace>/<name>`.
- Now it is `root/<dir>` - the namespace and name are now read from `package.yaml` instead.
- Adds the parent directory of the current project to the default `ENSO_LIBRARY_PATH`.
- It is treated as a secondary path, so the default `ENSO_HOME/lib` still takes precedence.
- This allows projects to reference and load 'sibling' projects easily - the only requirement is for the project to enable `prefer-local-libraries: true` or add the other local project to its edition. The edition resolution logic is **not changed**.
Closes#6261
- Adds support for copy-pasting nodes with `cmd + C` and `cmd + V` shortcuts.
- Only a single, currently selected node will be copied. Adding support for multiple node copies seems easy, though (but was out of the scope of the task).
- We use a custom data format for clipboard content. Node's metadata is also copied, so opened visualizations are preserved. However, the visualization's size is not preserved, as we do not store this info in metadata.
- For custom format to work, we use a pretty new feature called [Clipboard pickling](https://github.com/w3c/editing/blob/gh-pages/docs/clipboard-pickling/explainer.md), but it is available in Electron and in most browsers already.
- Pasting plain text from other applications (or from Enso, if the code is copied in edit mode) is supported and is currently enabled. There are some security concerns related to this, though. I will create a separate issue/discussion for that.
- Undo/redo works as you expect.
- New node is pasted at the cursor position.
When building the dev IDE version with `./run ide build`, it creates the engine distribution with version `2023.2.1-dev`. This causes the version check to fail preventing opening the projects.
- Closes#6730
- Changes config to allow environment variables to override server host and port
- Adds port scanning to Electron app to ensure the PM is started at a free port
# Important Notes
- `SERVER_PORT=abcd enso.AppImage` does NOT work. It would not be difficult to implement, but it probably needs discussion on how exactly it should be implemented - for example, `SERVER_PORT` is quite a generic name, should the Electron app pass though something like `ENSO_PM_SERVER_PORT` to the PM as `SERVER_PORT` instead?
⚠️ Port scanning is *only* implemented in the JS frontend. It is not implemented:
- In Scala, because the JS/Rust code calling it needs to know the port as well. There shouldn't be any problems with adding port scanning though, if that's desired
- In Rust, because I'm not sure parsing the host and port from a string is a good idea.
- (This also applies to JS, but it *must* work in JS, and port scanning is already a dependency there so it's quite a bit easier)
- QA *will* need a new PM (`sbt buildProjectManagerDistribution` or `./run backend sbt` -> `buildProjectManagerDistribution`), and the path must be supplied as: `-engine.project-manager-path=path/to/new/pm/here`
This commit introduces a new cursor shape, a double arrow, to be displayed during the hover over the resize grip in the graph editor's visualization component. The rotation of the double arrow depends on whether the cursor is to the left or right of the dividing line from the top left to bottom-right corner of the grip. This gives a more intuitive visual cue to users about the direction of resizing.
Use the new Enso Font; also change the anti-aliasing logic to be based on device pixel ratio, rather than platform. This will improve the clarity of font rendering on Windows/Linux machines with high pixel densities.
# Important Notes
Style changes:
- Use the Enso Font for code in Rust, replacing the DejaVu fonts.
- Use the Enso Font in HTML: code in documentation, and error visualizations.
- Change SpanWidgets from Bold to Extra Bold, to match the design.
Implementation improvements:
- The new font download is cached (and Github-authenticated); this should eliminate a "rate limit" build failure I've
encountered in the past.
- Clean up DocSection HTML rendering a bit.
- Remove a CSS file that seems to have been superseded.
* Support arguments list in the doc parser
* Support new doc sections in documentation panel
* Remove headers
* Remove outer dom and place breadcrumbs
* Fix methods icon
* Use unordered list class in css
* Improve tags styles
* Remove virtual component groups docs
* Cleanup top-level css styles
* Small adjustments to headers
* Add styles for emphasized text
* Add bold font for arguments
* Self-review
* Remove redundant placeholder struct.
* Update outdated doc.
* Avoid empty paragraph.
* Reduce allocations.
* Update test to remove empty paragraph.
* Fix rebase issues.
* Improve padding and size handling in UI themes
Added padding_x and padding_y to hardcoded theme's breadcrumb settings to ensure consistent padding. Also, these padding settings and breadcrumb_height are now used directly in the Style structure, eliminating hardcoded values in the view documentation.
* Adjusted breadcrumb background dimensions calculation.
* Add support for improper arguments formatting in documenation comments
* Do not include Icon tag into the docs
* Fix documentation panel resizing
* enso-formatter
Fixes#7423
Refactored widget matching algorithm to allow creating wrapper widgets even in cases where the widget config override is present. That allowed the widgets to be reordered, such that the argument name ends up being inside the dropdown widget. That way clicking it opens the dropdown.
Added explicit manual layout for the dropdown arrow position. Now it is positioned on the center of a selected appropriate child widget. For prefix chains, the leftmost part of the prefix application (the method or constructor) is selected.
# Important Notes
Refactoring: I changed the internal representation of `ImString` to `Rc<str>` instead of `Rc<String>` to reduce the number of allocations and memory jumps. I even tried to remove `ImString` altogether, but it was not easy, and the main problem was lacking Default implementation.
This was meant to be a trivial change, but actually a dirty workaround needed to be applied. Because enter is used to both open searcher and accept input/entry, both actions were fired at once. I fixed it by debouncing opening searcher event (so the searcher will be opened only once key event handling is over)
Fixes#7411
So far, this branch removes window control buttons and go-to dashboard (hamburger icon), and adds option for dashboard to set offset of the rest of top bar panels.
MethodProcessor generates code for builtin method invocation that is wrapped in `try-catch` and handles some predefined subset of `RuntimeException`. So far, only `com.oracle.truffle.dsl.api.UnsupportedSpecializationException`.
#### The Plot
- there used to be two kinds of benchmarks: in Java and in Enso
- those in Java got quite a good treatment
- there even are results updated daily: https://enso-org.github.io/engine-benchmark-results/
- the benchmarks written in Enso used to be 2nd class citizen
#### The Revelation
This PR has the potential to fix it all!
- It designs new [Bench API](88fd6fb988) ready for non-batch execution
- It allows for _single benchmark in a dedicated JVM_ execution
- It provides a simple way to wrap such an Enso benchmark as a Java benchmark
- thus the results of Enso and Java benchmarks are [now unified](https://github.com/enso-org/enso/pull/7101#discussion_r1257504440)
Long live _single benchmarking infrastructure for Java and Enso_!
- Ensures any SQL warnings reported by the database through the JDBC driver are processed and forwarded to the user.
- These warnings show issues like the implicit name truncation that this PR is also solving. It's good to make sure they are visible as they can help avoid and understand unexpected problems. They should not show up in most standard workflows.
- Adds simple history to our REPL.
Closes#7244
- Section navigator removed
- Added a button panel on top of the documentation
- Show/hide documentation panel button is functional, documentation panel has animation.
- All other buttons are read-only (unclickable).
- "Hovered item preview" caption was removed from the documentation panel
- Breadcrumbs are flying in the temporary position. They should be functional but will be moved to the documentation panel in a separate task.
- Sizes and layouts of the CB panels match the design.
- The color of the application background changed. Also fixed a bug because of which the stylesheet setting of the background was not taken into account.
Known issues:
- ~~The buttons panel partially hides the topmost entry in the list. To fix that, we would need API changes to the grid view, I decided not to do that as part of the PR. We need to add padding on top of the scroll area content.~~
- Scrollbar is not rendered correctly at the bottom – the scroll area mask should crop it.
- Component list entries are not exactly as in design – I didn't touch this part of the code.
- Breadcrumbs are in the wrong position.
Implementation of new node design. Includes many changes related to stylesheet update handling and per-style FRP construction, as well as refactoring of scene layers used by graph editor. Some additional components were migrated to use `Rectangle` shape and new mouse handling events. Fixed text rendering, where random thin lines appeared at the borders of glyph sprites. Refined edge layout to match new node sizes and not leave any visible gaps between line segments.
The node colors are currently randomly selected from predefined list. Later this will be improved to use group information from the suggestion database, once that is fully migrated to use the documentation tags, thus removing the dependency on the execution context.
Introduce new APIs for managing focus and using focus to inform delivery of keyboard events.
Use new APIs to implement the following behavior:
Focus:
- If the component browser is opened, its initial state is *focused*.
- If the node input area's text component is clicked, the component browser's state becomes *blurred*.
- If a click occurs anywhere in the component browser, the component browser's state becomes *focused*.
Event dispatch:
- When the component browser is in the *focused* state, it handles certain keyboard events (chiefly, arrow keys).
- If an event occurs that the component browser doesn't handle, the node input area's text component receives the event.
# Important Notes
Changes to display object interface:
- **`display::Object` can now be derived.**
- Introduce display object *focus receiver* concept. Many components, when receiving focus, should actually be focused indirectly by focusing a descendant.
- For example, when the CB Panel receives focus, its descendant at `self.model().grid.model().grid` should be focused, because that's the underlying Grid View, which has its own event handlers. By allowing each level of the hierarchy to define a `focus_receiver`, focus can reach the right object without the CB panel having to know structural details of its descendants.
- When delegating to a field's `display::Object` implementation, the derived implementation uses the child's `focus_receiver`, which will normally be the correct behavior.
**Changes to `shortcut` API**:
- New `View::focused_shortcuts()` is a focus-aware alternative to `View::default_shortcuts()` (which should now only be used for global shortcuts, i.e. shortcuts that don't depend on whether the component is focused). It's based on the *Keyboard Event* API (see below), so events propagate up the focus hierarchy until a shortcut is executed and `stop_propagation()` is called; this allows sensible resolution of event targets when more than one component is capable of handling the same keypress.
Keypress dataflow overview:
DOM -> KeyboardManager -> FrpKeyboard -> KeyboardEvents -> Shortcut.
Low-level keyboard changes to support Focus:
- New `KeyboardManager`: Attaches DOM event handlers the same way as `MouseManager`.
- New *Keyboard Event* API: `on_event::<KeyDown>()`. Events propagate up the focus hierarchy. This API is used for low-level keyboard listeners such a `Text`, which may need complex logic to determine whether a key is handled (rather than having a closed set of bindings, which can be handled by `shortcut`).
- FRP keyboard: Now attaches to the `KeyboardManager` API. It now serves primarily to produce Keyboard Events (it still performs the role of making `KeyUp` events saner in a couple different ways). The FRP keyboard can also be used directly as a global keyboard, for such things as reacting to modifier state.
Misc:
- Updated the workspace `syn` to version 2. Crates still depending on legacy `syn` now do so through the workspace-level `syn_1` alias.
Fixes#7336 in a quick way.
Next to the old way of defining groups, the library can just add `GROUP` tag to some entities, and it will be added to the group specified in tag's description.
The group name may be qualified (with project name, like `Standard.Base.Input/Output`) or just name - in the latter case, IDE will assume a group defined in the same library as the entity.
Also moved some entities from "export" list in package.yaml to GROUP tag to give an example. I didn't move all of those, as I assume the library team will reorganize those groups anyway.
### Important Notes
@jdunkerley @radeusgd @GregoryTravis When you will start specifying groups in tags, remember that:
* The groups still belongs to a concrete project; if some entity outside a project wants to be added to its group, the "qualified" name should be specified. See `Table.new` example in this PR.
* If the group name does not reflect any group in package.yaml **the tag is ignored**.
* A single entity may be only in a single group. If it's specified in both package.yaml and in tag, the tag takes precedence.
Closes#7200
Updating the looks of the project's top bar to the new design.
- Project name moved from breadcrumbs to the left of the execution environment selector.
- All components use auto-layout in most places, except for breadcrumbs (changing them means basically rewriting them from scratch, but we will use CB's breadcrumbs instead)
- Components no longer rely on individual positioning but rather work as parts of the "project view top bar" abstraction (with the use of auto-layout)
- We have a new debug scene for the project view top bar, replacing the debug scene for execution environment selector.
- Most style parameters were moved to the stylesheet, except breadcrumbs.
- Top bar is now fully managed by the Project View, not Graph Editor
- Project name is no longer editable. There is no way to rename a project inside the IDE (the corresponding code is removed). It can react on mouse hovers, but the color will not change for now.
- Current execution environment has extra bold font and is no longer capitalized.
- **Breadcrumbs can be considered broken** from the design point of view. I have no intention of making them look as in the design because we want to reuse CB's breadcrumbs component instead. The functionality should be fully preserved, though.
- The Play Icon on the execution environment selector is not updated to the newest design, I suggest creating a separate task for that (I think it is the first case of a rounded triangle in the application, and implementation would some time).
* Delay LS shutdown when last client disconnects
Rather than closing Language Server immediately, we delay the shutdown
until some timeout hits. This gives a chance for new clients to connect
without paying the price of the initialization again.
More importantly, during hibernation/restart, the connection between
client (IDE) and LS is severed so it appears as if client disconnect. In
fact a few moments later IDE would attempt to re-establish the
connection on the same port. Without this change, LS shutsdown and
further attempts to connect on that particular port will fail.
There are still problems on the IDE-side after waking up from
hibernation but it is not related to Language Server.
* Introduce a separate timeout for delayed shutdown
Can't/shouldn't use the same timeout value as for shutdown timeout for
delaying shutdowns initiated by lack of clients.
* Add test demonstrating the new functionality
The current instructions to _build, use and debug_ `project-manager` and its engine/ls process are complicated and require a lot of symlinks to properly point to each other. This pull requests simplifies all of that by introduction of `ENSO_ENGINE_PATH` and `ENSO_JVM_PATH` environment variables. Then it hides all the complexity behind a simple _sbt command_: `runProjectManagerDistribution --debug`.
# Important Notes
I decided to tackle this problem as I have three repositories with different branches of Enso and switching between them requires me to mangle the symlinks. I hope I will not need to do that anymore with the introduction of the `runProjectManagerDistribution` command.
This PR modifies the builtin method processor such that it forbids arrays of non-primitive and non-guest objects in builtin methods. And provides a proper implementation for the builtin methods in `EnsoFile`.
Changelog:
- add: `/projects/{project_id}/enso_project` HTTP endpoint returning an `.enso-project` archive structure
- update: archive enso project to a `.enso-project` `.tar.gz` archive
- update: make project `path` a required field
This PR contains minimal changes to have a visual part of #7198. It updates the view of _component list only_ to the newest design. The CB panel was shrunk in process, and breadcrumbs are a bit obscured, but they will be moved around in the next few PRs.
Closes#7047
Adds an ability to resize visualizations by dragging a special (invisible) shape along the bottom and right borders of visualizations.
- Visualizations are aligned to the left border of the node now.
- Default visualization width now equals to the node's width (default height is the same)
- Changing the width of the node also changes visualization width, but only if no manual drag-resizing was applied
- Visualization size is preserved when reopening visualization (but it is not saved in project metadata)
- No visual indication that resizing is possible exist, it will be implemented in #7049https://github.com/enso-org/enso/assets/6566674/2f2525e8-cf10-4c92-953a-b69eb97a954a
As discovered in #7224, Json RPC protocol was added to the asynchronous resource initialization stage, as part of #6306, but was not in fact initialized at that point.
Instead it was initialized when the server was started to be able to serve correctly the initialization messages. A classic Catch-22. It was really hard to discover this just by looking at the code, but the profiling clearly showed where the time was spent.
This change splits Language Server's protocol into two:
- the first one accepts `heartbeat/init` and `session/initProtocolConnection`
- the second one enriches it with the full set of supported messages
This shifts the initialization from blocking for 0.5 sec to only ~30ms, and performing the second stage asynchronously.
Closes#7224.
It is relatively easy to reach timeouts on weak systems for startup
operations on project manager. Once a timeout is reached, startup will
not proceed any further.
This PR is a bit of an experiment. It adds adds timeout retries to give a bit of a leeway to
under-powered machines and to log some progress on the way, so that we
know that certain actions are still in progress.
Package's config information, once loaded, never changed. While there is typically no need for it, this was problematic when the config became out-of-sync with the filesystem, like in the case of project rename action.
In rename, the config's properties would be updated in the FS, but that would never be reflected in module's package. Therefore further compilations would continue to ask for the old namespace.
Most of the changes are cosmetic (s/`.config`/`.getConfig()`) except for the new `reloadConfig` method on `Package` that is being called in `RenameProjectCmd` handler.
Closes#7062.
# Important Notes
The reported `ExecutionFailed` error should have been mostly fixed already via #7143. This change makes sure that all the related warnings are gone as well and the compiler uses the updated namespace.
The change adds logic that will attempt a few retries when executing `gu` (GraalVM updater) commands. Previously, if it failed, it failed. Retries should help with the most common case - occassional network hiccups.
Closes#6880.
# Important Notes
Note that I don't use an external library for retries on purpose. Didn't want to introduce a yet another dependency for this tiny functionality.
Remove a leak detector added in #7038, that has a large (~10s) impact on startup performance. I missed the performance impact during QA, but noticed it after merge.
Fixes#6908
Fast typing leads to a race condition where the end of the node editing can happen where the state of the CB is not caught up yet. This leads to two issues:
1. The wrong selection is made, as the View of the Component Browser has not been updated yet, but the selection from there is used to determine how the node is created.
2. Processing of the keys is aborted early, while still waiting for additional key input.
This is now fixed.
Fixes#6772
When detaching an existing edge by grabbing by a source port, the node's code is no longer immediately modified. It is only changed once the edge has been either connected or destroyed. When grabbing on the source side, the existing behavior is preserved. That way, we always have guaranteed place to keep the edge connected to.
# Important Notes
The whole edge connection and view handling at the graph-editor view level has been completely rewritten. The edge endpoints are now identified using new `PortId` structure, that is not dependant on the span-tree. This prepares us for eventual removal of the span-tree in favour of manipulating AST directly. Right now those `PortId`s are still stored within the span-tree nodes, but it will be easy to eventually generate them on the fly from the AST itself. The widget tree has also already been switched to that representation where appropriate.
Additionally, I have started splitting the graph editor FRP network into smaller methods. Due to its absolutely enormous size and complexity of it, I haven't finished the split completely, and mostly edge-related part is refactored. I don't want to block this PR on this any longer though, as the merge conflicts are getting a bit unwieldy to deal with.
1. Fixed leaks of Scene. We were making several cycles of Rc references.
2. Fix removing event listeners: the remove listener option should take same options as those passed in addEventListener.
# Important Notes
- `Rectangle`: When `inset > border`, the extra space is now between the body and the border, not outside the border.
- More robust node layering logic. Now an inconsistent layer order cannot occur, even if something strange happens (like editing an expression and an edge at the same time).
- The dynamic drop down in the `drop_down` example scene doesn't show any entries before (or after) this, so I can't test the dynamic case.
Changelog:
- add: new suggestion type Getter that is not exposed to the api
- update: do not return suggestion of type getter when doing a global search (without specifying self types)
Private suggestions and modules mentioned in the issue will be filtered out after we finish the work on the new (refined) exports algorithm.
This PR adds facilities for controllers to be aware of what shortcut command is currently being processed. This allows grouping consequences of single user action into a single transaction without hard-coding it separately for all the separate paths case-by-case, which turned out to be challenging and error-prone.
Additionally, a number of minor fixes were carried over from #6877:
* workaround for #6718;
* avoiding creating spurious transactions when dealing with node positions;
* dropping any non-user user-triggered transactions that occur during the IDE project initialization.
Before, we prevented default on every keyboard event, making usage of HTML inputs impossible (both on the dashboard and inside visualizations).
# Important Notes
The list of shortcuts was based on comments in #6364 (where the `preventDefault` was introduced).
Implements #6544 (eliminates 10/42 of the constantly-displayed draw calls).
Fixes#6717. Improves startup CPU time by 5% (250ms, loading Orders on my dev box).
# Important Notes
- Edges: New implementation uses only Rectangle under most conditions.
- Node and action area: Replace some shapes with Rectangle.
- List view: Replace some shapes with Rectangle.
- Display object hierarchy: The lowest-level shape instance types no longer have their own display objects.
- Includes initial support for using `Rectangle` to display triangles.
Fixes#6763
The bug was caused by pushing stack frames in the engine first, then failing to get graph controller - in that case we didn't update graph, but kept the stack, so graph was not synchronized with stack.
This PR changes the approach: we try to open graph first, only then push frames to stack. If _any_ frame will fail, we try to pop those we pushed so far, to restore the previous state. The same fix was applied for leaving nodes.
Also, I realized, that running several "enter node" / "leave node" actions could mix push/pop operations, making a mess with our execution context state. I've added a mutex to ensure we won't do this: the contesting operation will simply fail.
# Important Notes
In case when _restoring_ state fails, I did not have any better idea than just trying until it succeed.
Now, quick typing in component browser and pressing "enter" should not cut off the last part typed. Fixes#6733https://github.com/enso-org/enso/assets/3919101/3979ed5a-ba4e-4e25-93e6-672e731b7bd8
On this occasion, also fixed "go-to-dashboard" button and "Unsupported engine version" being over the full-screen visualization. Fixes#6722
# Important Notes
I did a significant refactoring of Project View:
1. The huge `frp::extend` block was split into multiple `init` methods.
2. Remaining of the "Old searcher" were removed.
3. The "Edited" event from node's input is emitted only when in edit mode (it's consistent with other API terminology, and makes FRP for showing CB much simpler.
The code was _mostly_ moved around, but the check is advised anyway, as there were small changes here and there.
Implements #6792Fixes#6715Fixes#6052Fixes#5689
The dynamic dropdown widgets entries now can specify additional widget configuration as a list of `parameters` of the inner method call. That allows for creating smarter widgets within nested constructors, taking the outer widget's context into account.
<img width="772" alt="image" src="https://github.com/enso-org/enso/assets/919491/97c70654-9170-4cf0-ae4d-2c25c74caa96">
With the changes to the serialization logic, I have also adressed issues related to automatic label generation for both static and dynamic dropdown entries. For access chains (e.g. `Foo.Bar.Baz_Qux`), the label will now always contain only the last segment, and all underscores will be removed (e.g. `Baz Qux`). This also applies to dynamic entries where the label is not explicitly specified in method annotation.
<img width="265" alt="image" src="https://github.com/enso-org/enso/assets/919491/1abe6c77-010b-4622-b252-97cd1543cb48">
Additionaly, now the dynamic entries containing constructors will also be resolved within suggestion database, allowing us to automatically insert relevant import, shorten the actually used expression and wrap it with parentheses if required. That was required for nested widgets to show up, as we depend on properly resolved argument names to show them. The widget definitions in annotations no longer need to wrap the expressions manually. Instead, the constructors used in dropdown entries should be specified using fully qualified names, similarly to how we do it in tag values.
CC @jdunkerley - The dropdown entries containing just a constructor will no longer need added parentheses around them. Instead, the constructors should be specified using fully qualified names, similarly to how we do it in tag values.
<img width="389" alt="image" src="https://github.com/enso-org/enso/assets/919491/19944b5b-d0c7-43ac-bf17-ca1556e0b3f0">
Note that currently the import resolution is attempted even if the used constructor is is not specified using a fully qualified name. To accomplish that, the IDE is performing a more expensive search through whole suggestion database for matching type and module (e.g. in example above, we are searching for a match for `Aggregate_Column.First`). If there are multiple potential matches due to a name collision, it is undefined which one would be preferred. Effectively one will be picked at random. To avoid that, the libraries should over time transition to using fully qualified names wherever possible.
# Important Notes
I have removed the `payload` field from the span tree, and with it the generic argument on its nodes. This was already partially done on the branch with new design, on which I also had a few changes that turned out to be useful for this PR. So I pulled it in as well. It is a nice simplification that will ease our further work on removing the span-tree altogether. The biggest impact it had was on the node output port, where I had to store the port data outside of the span tree. This is the approach we would be taking when transitioning to AST anyway.
Empty edition (null value) was parsed as NaN, which was confusing. This change correctly detects the case before trying different fallback mechanisms.
Addresses invalid warning mentioned in #6806.
Only invalidate the graph editor view at most once per frame. On develop, this saves about 70ms (2%). Testing a recent backend without #6755 as a stress-test, this saves about 5s (45%). This reflects better scalability to large numbers of `SuggestionUpdate` messages.
Fixes#6630.
# Important Notes
- Also fix intermittent profiling failures occurring since the introduction of microtasks.
* Remove unused code: project management in component browser
* Encapsulate internal FRP logic of project list
* Collapse some code paths
* Open project passed on command line through presenter
A project name or ID that is passed on the command line was initialised
in the controller setup, before the presenters and views are set up.
Now, we fully initialise the IDE before opening a project so we have
control over the view while a project is being opened.
* Show a spinner in all cases of opening a project
* Let root presenter open/close projects when switching projects
* Change spinner to make progress over a fixed period
* Resolve issues when Project Manager API isn't available
* Bump wasm size limit
Fixes some of #6662
Issues addressed:
- `ide watch` and `gui watch` should now use the desktop platform
- error screen should now be shown when passing invalid options
- password (both creating password when registering, and resetting password) should now warn on invalid input
# Important Notes
Instead of checking whether `location.hostname === 'localhost'`, I've opted to use a constant defined by the build tool instead. This is to make it easier to merge the cloud IDE and desktop IDE entrypoints in the future, since it would be able to simply set `platform: Platform.cloud` in the build config.
Fixes#6787
# Important Notes
I can't get Project Manager compilation to work locally so I guess I'll be relying on CI to verify that it's working correctly?
Of course, QA should be able to catch any problems too - the websocket API hasn't been changed so it should work out of the box with the current dashboard.
Refactored the logic behind selecting appropriate widgets for span tree nodes. Now the bulk of it is moved into widget methods. When a given widget type is reporting to be not compatible with the expression, it will not be used even if the configuration was overriden using an method argument annotation. In that case, the usual logic for automatically selecting the appropriate widget will kick in.
# Important Notes
The mouse handling changes involve an unfortunate huge hack, where we enable mouse events on the mouse shape during box selection. That way we know for sure that no other shape will be able to receive mouse enter event. Then the list editor widget is modified to only actually respond to events when its background is hovered. We will definitely want a more proper way to handle mouse event contention, but it's definitely out of scope for current bugfixing.
This change fixes the rather elusive bug where shutdown hooks could not be fired when shutdown was taking too long and termination was forced.
Under the circumstances described in detail in ticket #6515 there was a small chance that we could have a shutdown race condition. Essentially the messages received when client was disconnected and language server forced the termination could lead to language server not sending the public `ProjectClosed` message which triggers shutdown hook. Now we always do.
Also made sure that multiple `ProjectClosed` messages don't lead to firing multiple shutdown hooks, which was another possibility.
No tests as one would have to be able to introduce different delays in various message handlers to simulate the problem.
Having ability to do such chaos testing would be nice but it is beyond the scope of this ticket.
I was able to reproduce the problem 100% with my specially crafted setup so I'm fairly confident about the change.
Closes#6515.
Artifically limiting the number of reported warnings to 100. Also added benchmarks with random Ints to investigate perf issues when dealing with warnings (future task).
Ideally we would have a custom set-like collection that allows us internally to specify a maximal number of elements. But `EnsoHashMap` (and potentially `EnsoSet`) are still WIP when it comes to being PE-friendly.
The change also allows for checking if the limit for the number of reported warnings has been reached. It will visualize by adding an additional "Warnings limit reached." to the visualization.
The limit is configurable via `--warnings-limit` parameter to `run`.
Closes#6283.
This PR fixes#6560.
The fix has a few elements:
1) Bumps the Engine requirement to the latest release, namely `2023.1.1`.
2) Changed the logic of checking whether a given version matches the requirement. Previously, we relied on `VersionReq` from `semver` crate which did not behave intuitively when the required version had a prerelease suffix. Now we rely directly on Semantic Versioning rules of precedence.
3) Code cleanups, including deduplicating 3 copies of the version-checking code, and moving some tests to more sensible places.
This is a re-creation of #6308.
Creates buttons to switch between cloud and local backends for listing directories, opening projects etc.
# Important Notes
The desktop backend currently uses a hardcoded list of templates, mostly because they look better because they have background images. However, it can easily be changed to use `listSamples` endpoint and switched to the default grey background.
Remove the magical code generation of `enso_project` method from codegen phase and reimplement it as a proper builtin method.
The old behavior of `enso_project` was special, and violated the language semantics (regarding the `self` argument):
- It was implicitly declared in every module, so it could be called without a self argument.
- It can be called with explicit module as self argument, e.g. `Base.enso_project`, or `Visualizations.enso_project`.
Let's avoid implicit methods on modules and let's be explicit. Let's reimplement the `enso_project` as a builtin method. To comply with the language semantics, we will have to change the signature a bit:
- `enso_project` is a static method in the `Standard.Base.Meta.Enso_Project` module.
- It takes an optional `project` argument (instead of taking it as an explicit self argument).
Having the `enso_project` defined as a (shadowed) builtin method, we will automatically have suggestions created for it.
# Important Notes
- Truffle nodes are no longer generated in codegen phase for the `enso_project` method. It is a standard builtin now.
- The minimal import to use `enso_project` is now `from Standard.Base.Meta.Enso_Project import enso_project`.
- Tested implicitly by `org.enso.compiler.ExecCompilerTest#testInvalidEnsoProjectRef`.
This PR fixes#6371.
# Important Notes
@kazcw @wdanilo I don't particularly like this solution, but I don't see any other good way to define the relationship between two instances of the same shape (`Rectangle`) used in different UI elements. If you are aware of a more elegant solution, I’d be happy to hear any suggestions.
Support rendering multiple flavors of a shape system in the same layer. Fixes bugs seen as text disappearing when multiple fonts are used together (#6460 and issue discussed in #6366).
Dead Letter logging is occasionally flooding our logs which is confusing to users reporting bugs. Left the possibility of a single report so that we know that something is happening.
Fixes#6416 by introducing `InlineableNode`. It runs fast even on GraalVM CE, fixes ([forever broken](https://github.com/enso-org/enso/pull/6442#discussion_r1178782635)) `Debug.eval` with `<|` and [removes discouraged subclassing](https://github.com/enso-org/enso/pull/6442#discussion_r1178778968) of `DirectCallNode`. Introduces `@BuiltinMethod.needsFrame` - something that was requested by #6293. Just in this PR the attribute is optional - its implicit value continues to be derived from `VirtualFrame` presence/absence in the builtin method argument list. A lot of methods had to be modified to pass the `VirtualFrame` parameter along to propagate it where needed.
Rewrites node input component. Now the input is composed of multiple widget components arranged in a tree of views with automatic layout. That allows creating complex UI elements on top of the node itself, and further widget positions will be automatically adapted to that. The tree roughly follow the span tree, as it is built by consuming its nodes and eagerly creating widgets from them. The tree is rebuilt every time the expression changes, but that rebuild process reuses as much previously created widgets as possible, and only updates their configuration as needed. Each widget type can have its own configuration options that can be passed to it from the parent, or assigned based on configuration received from the language server.
<img width="773" alt="image" src="https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/919491/233439310-9c39ea88-19bc-43da-9baf-1bb176e2724e.png">
# Important Notes
For now, all span-tree updates are sent over to the shared Frp endpoint of the whole tree, so there is no mechanism for intercepting them by the parent widgets. One idea would be to use existing bubbling/capturing events on widget display objects for that purpose, but I think existing implementation is simpler and more convenient, and we can always easily change that if we have a use for it.
There are some issues with performance due to much more display objects being created on the graph. Expect it to be a little worse, especially at initialization time.
It turns out that preventing default for mouse events is a bad idea in general. It shouldn't affect other fixed bugs because (afaik) all of them were caused by keyboard events.
Update shader tools to new version. Notably, this release contains spirv-cross with fixed issue https://github.com/KhronosGroup/SPIRV-Cross/issues/2129.
# Important Notes
Spirv-cross has no versioning that we could use to specify requirements for using system-wide installed versions. Instead, we have to download the prebuilt distribution by default, so we can rely on known good versions. The usage of binaries in PATH can still be enabled with a build flag, but it is discouraged due to severity of the bug and no easy way of detecting it. If the project is built with buggy shader tools version, the application will run, but it will be visually slightly broken in unexpected ways.
Simplified layout algorithm by removing `content_origin`, and instead treating `(0.0, 0.0)` as origin point in every layout object. This change allows overflowing containers that are within auto-layout. The parent element will no longer be moved within the grid cell when its children overflow it.
# Important Notes
When implementing this change, I have found that when object's size was modified without ever touching its position, that change was not being picked up in the "modified children" list, and `on_updated` was never triggered. Because some sprites now are bottom-left aligned, that is now a common case and was reproducible on the auto-layout example scene. I ended up fixing it by introducing another dirty flag for `computed_size` changes. Right now that flag is applied very broadly (on each layout update), but in the future we might make it more precise by actually checking if the size was changed in the process.
I believe that this might also be a fix for #5095, as I cannot reproduce it anymore with those changes.
When the project is renamed, the engine cleans up affected modules and initiates modules re-indexing to fill the suggestions database with new records. This way it reduces the amount of information stored in the suggestions database and helps implement #6080 optimization.
Changelog:
- remove: rename features from the suggestions database
- update: rename command to initiate modules cleanup and project re-execution
- fix: #6137
- Added alignment configuration option for shape systems. That allows creating bottom-left aligned sprites, which will behave much more naturally inside auto-layouts.
- Added support for alignment in manual layouts. When alignment is set, the manual layout will position the child node at the respective border of its bounding box. The size of aligned node will not be affected. The difference from auto-layout alignment is that each node is aligned individually, and it is not affected by its siblings. This allows for constructing more complicated responsive layouts that don't necessarily follow the grid, without creating wrapper auto-layout elements for each child.
![layout-anim-and-alignment](https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/919491/227951742-7a7fd48a-7d07-4e19-b824-8c136e3fb381.gif)
Implements #5919
Apart from some fixed glitches, no visual differences are present. This is mostly a refactor.
- Decoupled node edit mode code from existing port implementation, so ports can easily be replaced in the near future without affecting edit functionality.
- Connected ports and widgets are now always hidden in edit mode. Previously in some situations the colored shapes were incorrectly displayed at wrong positions during editing.
- When entering edit mode, the text cursor is placed at the correct location corresponding to clicked code, compensating for shift introduced by argument placeholders.
# Important Notes
There is a remaining known issue with incoming edges being placed at incorrect places during edit mode, sometimes even outside of the node. This issue is also present in develop. It doesn't make sense to resolve it now, as we are planning to rewrite the ports tree very soon. It will be fixed with that rewrite.
It is sometimes impossible to figure out the real reason for invalid text edit request. Added a bit of context to failures to narrow down the cause of the failure.
# Important Notes
Should help with diagnosing issues like #6099.
Implements #5933: adding tooltips to the buttons next to nodes.
To make the UI consistent, I've added tooltips to the `ToggleButton` class directly, since whenever you have an icon button, it seems helpful to have a tooltip.
`ToggleButton` is only used for the profiling button in the top-right corner and the buttons next to nodes. The output context switch button [isn't implemented yet](https://github.com/enso-org/enso/issues/5929), but once it is, adding a tooltip should be one-liner.
